Calculator basics
What does “gold-equivalent value” mean?
It means the current dollar value of the amount of gold your original money could have bought on the selected date.
Is this the same as an inflation calculator?
No. Inflation calculators estimate changes in consumer prices. InGold.today compares a past amount with the market price of gold.
Why use troy ounces?
Precious metals are quoted in troy ounces. One troy ounce is about 31.103 grams, slightly heavier than a standard ounce.
Why do results change?
The current gold price moves during market hours and can change daily. A result is a snapshot based on available data when you calculate.
Can I use any date?
You can use supported historical dates in the calculator. For dates between known data points, the site estimates the gold price by interpolation.
Accuracy and limitations
Are dealer premiums included?
No. Spot gold is a benchmark price. Real coins, bars, and storage products can include premiums, spreads, shipping, custody, and insurance costs.
Does the calculator include taxes?
No. Tax treatment depends on country, product type, holding period, and personal circumstances.
Does a higher gold-equivalent result mean I should have bought gold?
Not necessarily. Purchases can have practical, emotional, professional, or cultural value that gold cannot replace. The calculator is educational.
Is this financial advice?
No. InGold.today is for information and education only. It does not recommend any investment decision.
Using the site
What should I calculate first?
Try an old receipt, a product launch price, a first salary, a college tuition amount, or a family story with a known date and price.
Why are there Golden Stories?
Stories make the math easier to understand by showing real cultural examples: phones, consoles, computers, cars, and other memorable purchases.
Where can I learn how the math works?
Read the methodology page for the formula, assumptions, and data behavior.
How can I compare buying options?
Start with the gold options page, then compare real providers carefully before making any decision.
